Effective Extraction for Paint Fumes, Overspray and Airborne Contaminants

Paint spraying can release airborne paint particles, mist, and fumes into the workplace.

Without effective control, these contaminants can enter the operator's breathing zone and spread into surrounding work areas.

Why Do Paint Spray Booths Need Extraction?

Spray painting creates a cloud of fine airborne particles during the process.

A properly designed spray booth uses controlled airflow to draw contaminated air away from the operator and through the extraction system.

Depending on the system design, extracted air may pass through filters before being safely discharged outside the building.

The effectiveness of the system doesn't depend solely on having a powerful extraction fan. Airflow through the booth, filtration, make-up air, operator position, and the condition of the extraction system can all influence how effectively contaminants are controlled.

How Does Paint Spray Booth Extraction Work?

A spray booth creates controlled airflow through the operator's working area.

Contaminated air generated during spraying is drawn towards the extraction area, where it passes through filtration and into the extraction system.

The extracted air can then be transported through ductwork and discharged outside the building.

The exact arrangement will depend on the type and design of the spray booth.

For the system examined in our recent case study, the walk-in booth incorporated two large filtered extraction sections using pleated paper and additional glass fiber filter material. Air was drawn through the filters by a belt-driven fan before being discharged externally above the building.

Make-Up Air Is Important Too

Extracting air from a spray booth means replacement air needs to enter the space.

This is often referred to as makeup air or supply air.

The relationship between extraction and incoming air can significantly affect airflow within a spray booth.

If the makeup air is restricted or isn't distributed effectively, the booth may not clear airborne contamination as efficiently as intended.

This is one reason why looking only at the extraction fan doesn't necessarily tell you how effectively the complete system is performing.

Paint Spray Booth LEV Testing

Where spray booth extraction is used as an LEV control measure, its performance needs to be assessed to establish whether it continues to effectively control the contaminants generated by the process.

A Thorough Examination and Test can include:

  • Visual examination of the spray booth and extraction system

  • Inspection of extraction hoods or enclosures

  • Examination of ductwork

  • Inspection of filters and air-cleaning equipment

  • Assessment of the extraction fan or air mover

  • Examination of the discharge arrangement

  • Checking manometers, gauges, and other monitoring devices

  • Airflow measurements

  • Face velocity measurements

  • Qualitative smoke testing

  • Assessment of contaminant capture

  • Review of operator working position

  • Identification of maintenance or remedial work

The purpose is not simply to establish whether the extraction fan operates. It is to determine whether the LEV system is effectively controlling the airborne contaminants produced by the process.

Why We Use Airflow Measurements

Airflow measurements provide objective data on the extraction system's performance.

For a spray booth, measurements can be taken at multiple points across the extraction face.

Taking measurements across the extraction area rather than at just one location can help identify variations in airflow and provide a more representative picture of the system's performance.

These measurements can then be considered alongside the system's intended or benchmark performance and the findings from the rest of the examination.

Smoke Testing a Spray Booth

Smoke testing is particularly useful when examining spray booth extraction because it allows our engineers to observe airflow within the actual working area.

It can help demonstrate:

  • The direction in which air is moving

  • Whether smoke is effectively captured

  • How contamination moves around the operator's working position

  • Whether it is transported towards the extraction system

  • Areas where smoke may collect or remain

  • How effectively the booth clears after the source has stopped

This provides information that airflow measurements alone may not reveal.

Operator Position Matters

Even a correctly performing extraction system can be less effective if it isn't used as intended.

The operator's position relative to the spraying process and the extraction airflow is particularly important.

Where possible, contaminated air should be drawn away from the operator's breathing zone and towards the extraction system.

Working in an inappropriate position can result in contaminated air being drawn towards or past the operator before reaching the extraction.

Correct working practices therefore form an important part of effective contaminant control.

Filters and Spray Booth Performance

Filters are an important part of many paint spray booth extraction systems.

As filters collect material, their condition can affect airflow resistance through the system.

Filters should therefore be inspected and changed in accordance with the requirements of the particular spray booth and extraction system.

Monitoring devices such as manometers can also provide useful information about changes in system performance.

Filter replacement should form part of a planned maintenance program rather than waiting until extraction performance has noticeably deteriorated.

Maintaining Spray Booth Extraction

LEV systems can deteriorate over time.

Filters can become loaded, ductwork can become damaged, fans and other components can wear out, and changes to the process or workplace can affect system performance.

Regular inspection and maintenance help keep the system working as intended between statutory examinations.

A good maintenance program should consider the complete system, including the booth or enclosure, filters, ductwork, extraction fan, monitoring equipment, discharge and make-up air arrangements.

COSHH and Paint Spray Booth LEV

Local Exhaust Ventilation used to control exposure to substances hazardous to health is subject to requirements under the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002 (COSHH).

LEV systems require statutory Thorough Examination and Testing by a competent person.

For many LEV systems, the maximum interval between Thorough Examination and Tests is 14 months. Testing may need to be carried out more frequently where wear and tear could cause the system's effectiveness to deteriorate sooner.

Records of the Thorough Examination and Test should also be retained.

A Real Spray Booth LEV Examination

A-Mac Environmental recently carried out a Thorough Examination and Test of a walk-in paint spray booth at a fabrication facility in Scotland.

Our engineers conducted visual inspections, airflow measurements, and qualitative smoke tests to assess the performance of the extraction system.

The examination found that the system was providing effective capture within the operator's working area when the painting process was carried out correctly.

However, smoke testing also identified high levels of smoke remaining in the booth.

Recommendations were made to increase the supply air and replace the make-up air filter to help improve the overall performance of the system.
